Frequently Asked Questions

PLEASE READ THE FAQ's AND SEE IF IT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION BEFORE TEXTING STU

Tuesday and Thursdays between Noon and 8 PM,  and odd Saturdays (like the 7th, 9th, 15th, etc.) between Noon and 6 PM or by appointment only. Our focus is on keeping the machines running to minimize everyones turn around time. Limiting distractions makes this a requirement. Our drop-off address is in the contacts section below. Please limit your visits to these hours, or text ahead to set up an appointment. We'll work with your needs.

Our sharpeners and process require fully profiled CBN wheels to properly sharpen the entire profile. We keep several profiled wheels in stock, but typically sharpen only the common profiles used by commercial mills in 7/8" tooth spacing. Currently that would be 4 degree, 10 degree, 7/39 (Turbo Seven) and 7/47 profiles. We can sharpen any Woodmizer thickness, width, and Style blade in these profiles. The most common blades are 7/39 for mills with more than 30 horsepower, and 7/47 for those with slightly less power. 10 and 4 degrees used to be common, but in our area they are used on mostly lower horsepower mills today.

We always reset your blades to the factory specifications after sharpening. Any service that claims you can resharpen several times before you need to reset the teeth is doing you a disservice. When a blade is sharpened material is removed from the face, gullet, and backside of the tooth. This actually grinds away some of the set in the teeth. Depending on how dull the blade was, and how many trips around the sharpener it takes to properly sharpen each tooth, there may be .002" - .004" of set removed from the teeth. Sharpening the tooth without resetting results in the tooth not having enough set to remove the sawdust. The result is that the blade will overheat, stretch, and loose tension, casuing you to start sawing wavy lumber. To be fair, if all you saw it 8" - 10" diamenter logs, it may work. Anyone in the NW sawing larger diameter Doug Fir logs for example will be seriously dissapointed in the performance. In most cases, if you tell us the log diameters you typically saw, we can optimize the set for you so you can achieve maximum performance in large, or small diameter logs.

We originally set up our resharp facility as part of a consortium, of commercial Woodmizer Sawmills. Almost all commercial mills have several dozen, if not several hundred blades, and the most efficient storage method is to flat pack your blades. If you send them to us coiled, they will be returned to you flat packed as we simply don't have room to store hundreds of boxes of coiled blades, but we can store thousands of flat packed blades. We don't particularilly care that they come in Woodmizer boxes, but they should come to us in a logical method, not thrown in the back of a pickup. If you have never flat packed a blade, or particularilly unpacked one, please refer to one of the dozens of videos online, or ask us to show you how to do it safely. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CUT THE METAL HOG RING TO REMOVE A BLADE. If several blades are flatpacked together, cutting that clip will release an insane amount of tension and you will be left trying to dodge super sharp twangy steel bits. It likely won't end well.

Our sharpeners and process require fully profiled CBN wheels to properly sharpen the entire profile. If a wheel isn't available, we can't sharpen it. Even if it is, each wheel costs around $400 and it doen't make sense for us to buy a wheel to sharpen a handful of blades. it also requires time to change the cams to ensure the proper stroke for different tooth pitches. If you're willing to pay for a wheel, and setup charges, we would be happy to grind your blades. Realistically it's cheaper to toss the blades and select ones with a more modern, productive profile. We can help you choose if you'd like.

We are set up to sharpen Woodmizer blades, but if a competitive blade matches one of the profiles noted above, we can sharpen them. For example, Ripper 37's and Timber Dogs have a 7 degree tooth profile with a 40 degree back angle. They are close enough to a 7/39 (7/39.5 in reality) that we can sharpen them, and they perform well after resharpening with a 7/39 wheel. Older WM 9 degree blades are close enough to a 10 degree, that we can resharpen them and turn them into 10 degree blades. You wouldn't notice the performance difference, except maybe they cut better as they are a bit sharper coming from our resharp.

Blades only have so many trips around the bandwheels before the fail, typically due to breakage. Thinner blades, or blades run with lower tension may get 8 - 10 resharps before they break. Thicker blades run on smaller wheels may get only 1 or 2 resharps before they break. Sharpening DOES NOT remove any "micro" cracks in your blade. If the blade is cracked we typically won't sharpen it. If you absolutely can't deal with broken blades, use new blades and toss them. There is ZERO warranty for a resharpened blade. Our resharpened blades generally perform as well as or better than a factory new blade. Sadly there is no way to tell when a blade has met it's useful life until it breaks, or is to thin to be resharpened.

We generally don't ship blades as the costs are prohibitive. Even with our volume, it costs us About $48 to ship out a box of blades in WA or OR. We are predomenantly a drop-off, and pick-up site with limited hours (see above). The reality is that if you have to pay a higher inbound and outbound freight cost, and a resharpen fee, it's cheaper to buy new blades and toss them then it is to ship them. We suggest that you take advantage of Woodmizers free shipping offer on blades when it comes around and stock up. If you flat pack your blades, you can store them until there are enough to justify a trip to our facility.

Exceptions are commercial operations that ship 150+ blades in approved shipping containers that we routinely ship and recieve via LTL truck freight. Contact us if this option may work for you.

Wood-mizer and smaller tooth carbide blades can be sharpened, but it requires a diamond profiled wheel. The problem is the carbide tip is very small, and our profiled grinders can only sharpen the profile. Carbide teeth don't have set like a normal blade, the kerf is ground into the side of the tooth. By sharpening the face only, you reduce the set of the blade and the blade performs poorly, especially in cuts over 16" or so. By the time a carbide blade needs re-sharpening, it's generally met it's useful life of trips around the wheel and will break soon anyway. We run carbide blades all the time, and toss them when they have met their useful life. We have never found it cost effective to sharpen a carbide blade, and we do our own sharpeneing... Still, we get 10 - 20 hours on a blade. Even with the higher costs, it's typically cheaper to use them up and toss them, than to continually resharpen and change say a doublehard blade.

Ideally, in the original shipping boxes, although most of our customers get their blades flat packed from Wood-Mizer, and we flat pack blades after they are sharpened. If you don't have the origianal boxes, please separate flat packed bundles with a piece of cardboard to protect the cutting edges, and limit the packs to 15 blades for LT35 - LT-40 mills or 10 blades or less for larger mills running longer (and heavier) blades.

If you ship blades coiled in boxes, they will be returned flat packed as it requires far less space to store them flat packed.

If you coil your blades, each blade must have a zip tie or band to secure the coils together. If you show up with a tangled disorganized mess of blades, we have provided blade racks for you to uncoil and sort your blades onto. If you are willing to take the time to unsort and hang your blades, we will resharpen them for you. We are also happy to show you how to flat pack and unpack your blades safely. If you wnat to just drop off a disorganized mess, we can't (O/K, we won't) help you.

We recycle blades all the time with our Sweed scrap chopper. We simply chop your blade and feed it through the scrap chopper and neatly drops out 3" chunks of material that are ultimately recycled. It's free if you use our services. A small donation is appropriatte if you want to dispose of several blades. The scrap prices paid don't come even close to offsetting the labor required to recycle the blades.

It's far quicker to respond to texts as we have a minute or 2 free time quite often as machines are in cycle.

Saw Blade Tooth Set Modifications

We can also provide advice on which saw blade is best suited for your needs. For some applications changing the tooth set allows your saw to perform significantly better.

Blades are typically reset to 0.020" - 0.028" per side. If you consistently saw thinner logs, or use a lower horsepower mill, you may want to reset your teeth to allow for a thinner kerf. This requires less HP from your mill and allows you to saw faster. If you are sawing wider logs, you may want to increase the tooth set to allow a bigger kerf to help remove sawdust more  efficiently. This helps to keep the blade cool and maintain blade tension. Loss, or lack of blade tension is a sure way to start sawing wavy lumber. All resharpened blades are set to Woodmizer specs. If you  prefer a different set for your application we are happy to oblige you at no extra charge as part of our resharp process. We can also reset your existing blades to match a specific need, please call for exact pricing, but it's about half the cost of a resharpened and set blade.

Custom Blades for Specialty Applications

We try not to compete with established Saw Manufactures, so If you are a current Wood-Mizer blade user and want new blades, we would refer you to the local dealer in Gresham. If you have a unique need that they can't fill, we have a working relationship with a few manufacturers and can typically get you a product that will work well for you.

Saw Mill Operations Training

We offer affordable saw sharpening training for those who want to learn how to sharpen their own saws. Our courses cover all aspects of saw sharpening, including blade selection, sharpening techniques, and maintenance.
